Department Responsibilities

The Building Inspection Department is responsible for the application and enforcement of the building codes and related ordinances regulating construction, alterations and the use of buildings within the city. The department is also responsible for administering the property maintenance code and licensing of rental housing.


Inspections can be arranged by contacting the Building Inspection Department. Please allow 24 hours notice and indicate the type of inspection, address and permit number when calling. Read a list of inspections (PDF) that we typically perform.

Minnesota State Building Code

The Minnesota State Building Code is the minimum construction standard throughout all of Minnesota including all cities, townships and counties. The State Building Code creates a level playing field for the construction industry by establishing the construction standard for all buildings in the state.
