A Farewell to Wayzata Police Chief Mike Risvold After more than 31 years of commitment to keeping communities safe, Wayzata Police Chief Mike Risvold, will be retiring on March 31st. Chief Risvold spent the first 14 years of his career with the Minnetrista PD and Hennepin County’s Sheriff’s Department before leading Wayzata PD as Chief in 2004. In 2005, Risvold received a community leadership award from Amy Klobuchar for his work on a specific criminal investigation during his time with Hennepin County (tune in to the Mayor Minutes Podcast this month to hear the full story). In 2018, he received The Richard W. Schaller Award which is presented annually to “a chief who is respected in his community and displays exemplary service” from the Minnesota Police Chiefs Association.
Closer to home, the Chief has led his department through successfully coordinated large events, developed strong relationships all throughout the community, and has fostered a department of smart, hardworking, dedicated, and caring staff and officers. Most recently, Chief Risvold has lead the Emergency Management Team in navigating COVID-19, with a significant focus on the safety and wellbeing of the community and City Staff.
Thank you, Chief, for your steady leadership through the years. You have kept the community safe and leave the WPD well positioned for the future!

Sign Up to Reduce Waste More than one-third of trash is organic material that could be composted. It’s easy to make a difference in reducing waste and protecting the environment by signing up for organics recycling! In organics recycling, you collect food and compostable items in separate Blue Bags that you place in your trash cart. The Blue Bags are later separated from the trash and sent to a compost site, where they are turned in a nutrient-rich soil amendment. Community DevelopmentThe Zoning Study Task Force Continues to Meet MonthlyDiscussion topics include updates to the City’s Design Standards as well as other sections of the Zoning Code. Public hearings for the proposed changes are expected to be scheduled with the Planning Commission and City Council in April and May.

Blake School to Close in 2023Blake School leaders have announced that the Wayzata campus (301 Peavey Lane) will close in 2023. There will be no changes for the 2021-22 or 2022-23 school years. Staff has met with school leaders. School leaders intend to host a neighborhood meeting this spring to listen to ideas from the community about the future of the site.

Public Works UpdateSeasonal Road RestrictionsThe City of Wayzata follows MnDOT's schedule for imposing and removing spring road weight limit restrictions. MnDOT has implemented Spring Load Restrictions beginning Thursday, March 4th, 2021 at 12:01 AM. Therefore, Wayzata has also implemented Seasonal Road Restrictions beginning Thursday, March 4th, 2021 at 12:01 AM. Additional information can be found by calling MnDOT at 651-747-2253 or by visiting the MnDOT website. A map indicating Wayzata’s restrictions can be found below.

2021 Construction Projects in the City of Wayzata Hollybrook Pond Maintenance This project will include excavating sediments that have accumulated in the pond over time, and removing the material from the site. This project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2021.
Circle A Drive and Hollybrook Road Sidewalk Construction Concrete sidewalks will be constructed along the north side of Hollybrook Road, and along the west side of Circle A Drive. This project will also include the installation of storm sewer pipes and structures and the relocation of some fire hydrants along the north side of Hollybrook Road, to make room for the sidewalk. Construction is expected to begin in May, and be completed before the end of August. 2021 Bituminous Mill & Overlay Select streets within the City of Wayzata will receive new bituminous surfacing during the summer of 2021. Streets to be milled and re-paved with bituminous asphalt include: Construction is expected to begin in July, following CenterPoint Energy’s gas main replacement project (see below), and will be completed by the end of September. Disruptions to traffic on any given street will be limited to a 2-3-week period. CenterPoint Energy Gas Main Replacement – Prior to the City’s 2021 Bituminous Mill & Overlay project, CenterPoint Energy will be replacing the existing gas main pipes along all of the streets designated to receive bituminous mill and overlay. The gas main replacement is expected to begin in April, and be completed in June. The City’s 2021 Bituminous Mill & Overlay project will commence shortly thereafter.
Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Discovered in Wayzata TreesThe Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) confirmed an emerald ash borer (EAB) infestation in the City of Wayzata A local tree contractor contacted the Wayzata Parks Department and reported an ash tree with bark cracks and S-shaped galleries, tell-tale signs of possible EAB infestation. The Parks Department contacted the MDA for confirmation. Winter is the perfect time to look for signs of emerald ash borer because the trees are still bare. There are several things residents should look for when checking for emerald ash borer.

Klapprich Park and Wayzata Beach Playground Area ReconstructionThe Park and Trail Board has been working to hire a consultant to assist with designing and constructing new playground equipment at Klapprich Park (planned for 2021), and for Wayzata Beach (planned for 2022). In the coming weeks, the Park and Trail Board will be evaluating proposals and selecting a consultant. There will be opportunity for public input during the design process. The existing playground equipment does not meet current accessibility requirements, and is at the end of its useful life after 25+ years.
