Wayzata Blvd & Superior Blvd Intersection Improvements – Construction Activity Continues

This project includes the reconstruction and realignment of the existing intersection, and includes a new traffic signal system, lighting along Superior Boulevard, and landscaped medians.  Work began in early April, and the project is anticipated to be substantially complete by the end of June. Work off of the roadway, including landscaping, final turf establishment, and minor clean-up work is expected to extend into July.

During the last week, the City’s contractor, New Look Contracting, completed installing the first layer of bituminous pavement throughout the project, and replaced storm sewer pipes and structures on the north side of Wayzata Blvd near Walgreens. They are currently working to complete the concrete medians in the center of the roadway on Superior Blvd and on Wayzata Blvd, as well as sidewalks throughout the project.
median
Newly installed median on Superior Boulevard
The second (of three) layers of bituminous pavement is scheduled to be placed on Monday, June 24th. The contractor will be flagging traffic at times to accommodate paving and median work. These construction activities will cause intermittent disruption to traffic on these roads. We encourage motorists to use alternate routes when possible, to avoid delays. Thank you for your continued patience during this challenging project.

Other work scheduled for the coming week includes installing irrigation systems and topsoil in the medians and behind the retaining walls and curbs, to be followed by landscaping activities.

The intersection will continue to be controlled by the temporary traffic signal while the permanent traffic signal system and the roadway pavements and medians are being constructed. Traffic will continue to be reduced to one lane in each direction on Wayzata Blvd and on Superior Blvd, and lanes will shift to accommodate work. Lane restrictions will be ongoing for the duration of the project, and delays are expected.

We encourage you to visit NavigateWayzata.com for the latest information about the project and suggested alternate routes. You can also sign up to receive text or email updates about these construction projects and learn new ways to get to your favorite local businesses as we sail ahead to a safer and more vibrant Wayzata.

Other 2019 Construction Projects

The 2019 construction season in and around Wayzata will be a busy one.  A summary of the larger activities follows:
  • MnDOT Bridge Replacement – MnDOT will be replacing the bridge over Highway 12, on Central Avenue.  This project will have significant impacts on access to/from Wayzata.  Work scheduled during June is not anticipated to impact traffic on Central Avenue / County Road 101, however the bridge is anticipated to be closed to traffic on Central Avenue / County Road 101 beginning 10 p.m. on June 28, and it will remain closed until late October. The existing bridge is currently scheduled to be removed between June 28 and July 1, which means Highway 12 will also be closed and traffic will be rerouted using the on and off ramps on each side of the bridge. All on and off ramps to and from Highway 12 are scheduled to be closed from July 1 until August 12, when the on / off ramps on the east side of the bridge are scheduled to re-open. The on / off ramps on the west side of the bridge will remain closed until late October.
For more detailed information on the project, please visit the project . We will continue to provide updates via the City website, social media, etc., as additional information becomes available.

    • Grading, paving and constructing medians along the east end between Orono Montessori School and Wayzata Boulevard West.
    • Constructing a pedestrian refuge island and crosswalk near Heather Lane to provide trail access.
